Internet Safety

internet safety

Internet safety is a important for parents and children to understand. Ensuring that children remain safe when they are on-line is an ever increasing challenge for parents today. Internet technology is changing faster than we can keep up with. Whether your children are instant messaging their friends, sending emails, or have their own website vulnerability to on-line predators loom. In addition, so many children have access to the Internet outside of the home through hand-held devices. Where does it end????

Stunning Survey Results

According to the Livingston Parent Journal, a new nationwide survey of children using computers in the home have a greater opportunity to engage in inappropriate Internet activities such as downloading illegal software, visiting unsafe websites, and chatting with strangers, than they do at school, where computer use tends to entail more supervision and stricter school rules.

The survey also indicates that half of the children polled in the study said their school's computer usage rules are more stringent than home rules. At home, computers tend to be used more for entertainment, requiring the parent to become prudent and weary of their child's on-line habits.

What Parents Can Do

The most critical thing we can do as parents to protect our children from risky, on-line behavior is communication. Below are a few suggestions to help in your effort.

- Ensure that your children know the specific dangers faced when surfing the internet.

- Set strict ground rules regarding chatting on-line with a stranger or giving out any personal information.

- Install Internet blocking software to limit risky on-line use.

- Keep your computer in an open area in your home where you can observe Internet activity as needed.
